Surrender (But Don’t Give Up)
Why Letting Go Is the Final Act of Courage in Your Encore Life
Principle #9 of 9 in the Art of Encore Living series.
How are you?
Not the polite answer.
The honest one.
There is abundant uncertainty in the world. Plans wobble. Assumptions crack. Futures refuse to cooperate. Somewhere along the way, most of us learn to cope by tightening our grip on expectations, identities, outcomes, and control.
But midlife has a way of exhausting that strategy.
At some point, the question shifts from “How do I make this turn out the way I want?” to something more unsettling and more honest:
What’s my relationship with not knowing what comes next?
That’s where this final principle lives.
And it begins with a word that makes many of us uncomfortable:
Surrender.
Not surrender as giving up.
Not surrender as resignation.
Not surrender as passivity.
Surrender as letting go of what was never yours in the first place.

Surrender is not weakness.
It’s discernment.
It’s the recognition that much of what we struggle against — outcomes, timing, other people, destiny — was never under our control to begin with.
And paradoxically, letting go of those things is not disempowering.
It’s liberating.
As Epictetus put it:
“Don’t hope that events will turn out the way you want.
Welcome events in whichever way they happen.
This is the path to peace.”
That line isn’t fatalistic.
It’s practical.
It invites us to stop negotiating with reality and start cooperating with it.
What if, just for today, you loosened your grip?
What if you held your expectations for the future a little more lightly — not forever, just for now?
What if you engaged what’s actually happening, rather than what should be happening, with a little more curiosity?
What if you treated your assumptions and agendas as provisional instead of absolute?
What if, just for today, you met yourself — and the people around you — with a little more compassion?

Surrender asks us to accept two truths at the same time:
You matter.
And you are not the center of the universe.
You have personal relevance.
And cosmic insignificance.
Holding both without despair or arrogance is not easy.
But it is stabilizing.
This is the kind of surrender that doesn’t shrink your life — it grounds it.
